If you think and/or express it as a group it is singular; If you think and/or express it as individuals acting within the whole it is plural
Audience is one of those “collective nouns” meaning a group of many people or things can be considered as one whole group (singular)
I am so used to saying that the audience have left
Its singular if you see the audience as a whole, plural if you see it as made up of individuals
